 The Research Centre of Central Institute of fisheries Technology was setup at Kakinada (Andhra Pradesh) in 1962 with a view to introduce commercial trawling from small and medium size boats for exploitation of fishery resources in the East Coast of India and to evolve standard designs of fishing gear accessories and methods for their exploitation and to develop responsible trawl systems for mechanized sector.  The fish processing technology section has started functioning from 1972, initially as a Centre for investigation on all India coordinated Research Project  on Transport of fish and subsequently worked on fish processing related to  improved  methods of handling, preservation, utilization of under-utilized varieties of inshore and deep sea fish/shell fish.  The Research Centre was shifted to Visakhapatnam in March 1995 to its own building and new extended wing of the second floor was constructed in 2011. The centre is located at 17°43’ N and 83°19’E, Ocean view Layout, Pandurangapuram, Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh on East Coast of India.
